Gallery of Famous Vegans at VegFest Oahu

When Harry Walter offered to bring his pop-up gallery of famous vegans to VegFest Oahu we knew we had to set him up in a high traffic area so the maximum amount of people could be exposed to his magic.  Harry is a true example of what we call Aloha Activism – sharing the vegan message with encouragement, enthusiasm, and above all: highly entertaining.  Watch this video clip of him in action shot for our Facebook Live stream.

Harry created this gallery of photos of famous celebrities, athletes, entrepreneurs, philosophers and others. He engages with passer-byes in fun games and trivia, asking people to guess the celebrity names along with special quotes as to why they have chosen a plant-based, vegan lifestyle. Starting in this fun way, Harry is then able to further open dialogue with people, offering important facts on how meat and dairy consumption effects the animals, human health, world hunger and the environment.

Harry has been an animal rights activist and humane educator since the mid 1980’s.  He first began doing street activism with his gallery of photos in Reno, at the Lake Tahoe Earth Day in 1998. There was an estimated 10,000 visitors to the event and Harry’s display had so many people crowded around it  that police security had to come to move the people along to keep foot traffic moving!  Now in Hawaii, Harry has set up his display in many locations around Oahu, including Kailua Beach Park, community health fairs, the University of Hawaii, and other venues.

Harry says: “I believe that people of all ages relate to famous celebrities, athletes, inventors, entrepreneurs, philosophers and others who they may admire for their outstanding achievements in their chosen fields. When they witness these people step out of their chosen fields to unite for a common cause to make the world a better place, they become united for a compassionate lifestyle, becoming  a voice  for the animals, environment, health, world hunger and so much more. People see these role models with so much success in their careers both professionally and financially give their time and money for a common cause. We see our heroes as one of us -understanding that the vegan ethic does not require  people to perform deeds of heroic  proportions.”
